Dr. Upchurch grew up working on a farm and in the family’s tire shop in Byrdstown, Tennessee. After his father’s death when he was just 17, he went on to attend Tennessee Tech University. He grew accustomed to long days, driving 90 miles round trip daily to college. After graduating with honors from TTU in 1976, he earned his Doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in 1980. The same year, he joined Dr. Martin to form Associates in Eye Care. Vision Therapy is an area where he has been a pioneer, as one of only a select few doctors in Kentucky to offer it. In 1995, Southern College of Optometry honored Upchurch with a Fellowship in Vision Development. Skeet shooting and handguns are among his interests, along with woodworking on occasion. He also enjoys singing gospel music. Gary and his wife Karen have three children: Amber, April, and Daniel.
